Mingei - The Beauty of Everyday Things

Apr 24 - Jun 30
Details:

About 100 years ago, the philosopher Soetsu Yanagi advocated for folk crafts, known as "mingei." Embracing the beauty found in everyday life and cherishing the materials and artisans, the concept of "mingei" is once again recognized as essential.

This exhibition explores the theme of "clothing, food, and shelter" through the lens of mingei, showcasing approximately 150 beautiful mingei items used in daily life. Additionally, the exhibition will visit the regions where mingei continues to thrive, introducing the artisans who work there and the traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations.

Furthermore, an installation that combines contemporary lifestyle with mingei, curated by Terry Ellis and Keiko Kitamura (Director of Mogi Folk Art), who have played a significant role in the current mingei boom, will be one of the exhibition highlights.
