Paragon or Puzzle? Your Own Perspectives on Works in the Suntory Museum of Art Collection

Apr 17 - Jun 16
Details:

When one hears the term "masterpiece"), one might initially think of items designated as national treasures or important cultural properties, universally recognized for their high artistic value. However, the masterpiece goes beyond just that. There is also a world of lesser-known masterpieces that have received little attention so far and haven't been prominently featured in exhibitions. Even things considered masterpieces may reveal a strong and captivating potential with just a change in perspective. In such moments, it can be said that there is no clear criterion to distinguish between a masterpiece and a hidden gem.

In this exhibition, the Suntory Museum Collection, guided by the basic philosophy of "beauty in everyday life," gathers various masterpieces to showcase their diverse charms from different angles. By learning anecdotes and unexpected facets of the artworks, one might find that a hidden gem can become a masterpiece, and vice versa. Determining whether the artwork is one or the other is entirely "up to the viewer."
