Job Description

In response to continued growth and high demand of our services, we are looking for a principal project manager in offshore wind to join our renewable energy team in Tokyo, Japan.

The principal project manager will be an engineer or other technically educated professional, experienced in wind energy technologies and markets, with the knowledge and expertise to oversee and direct the delivery of technical advisory services for wind projects, with excellent quality, on time and on budget.

Mott MacDonald's wind energy portfolio is extensive with a strong order book for technical advisory, design and owner’s engineer assignments regionally in East Asia and globally.


Responsibilities

By joining our team, you will contribute to some of the largest, most challenging and innovative projects in Japan and worldwide. You will be working with a strong renewable energy team and other discipline professionals delivering prestigious projects for a wide variety of stakeholders including developers, investors, lenders, original equipment manufacturers, and regulators. The role is varied in its nature and will include working in Japan and for the wider Asia Pacific region, for both fixed-foundation and floating offshore wind projects, providing, among others:

  • Technical advisory and due diligence services as independent engineer
  • Engineering support on Japanese offshore wind projects
  • Owner's engineering, construction supervision and design review services
  • Concept and FEED design engineering
  • Feasibility studies

As a technical principal you will be responsible for:

  • managing the portfolio and projects
  • managing commercial proposals (bids)
  • leading, attending, contributing to internal and external meetings and site visits, locally or internationally, as required
  • directly interfacing with clients on behalf of Mott MacDonald
  • working closely with other Mott MacDonald business teams and units to establish internal ‘delivery’ network
  • assisting with professional excellence activities across subject areas
  • assisting with the development of staff
  • supporting the development of the offshore and onshore renewables OE, IE, and design capabilities
  • raising the profile of projects internally and externally
  • establishing a coherent service package linked to existing clients and markets
  • ensuring business management systems (BMS) compliance

Qualifications

  • Degree level qualifications in engineering or similar technical subject (e.g. Civil, Electrical, Mechanical)
  • Professional Engineer (e.g. P.E.Jp) or Certified Chief Electrical Engineer is desirable
  • 5+
    years of renewable energy sector experience, with a focus on wind including onshore and offshore
  • Experience in consultancy is desirable
  • Experience working in the East Asia region is desirable
  • Experience working within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment
  • Experience in technical application process of wind project required by the authorities, e.g. METI, MLIT, utility company, etc
  • Project management expertise across a wide range of disciplines with strong track record of ensuring program performance and customer satisfaction
  • Proven experience of business development and/or stakeholder management\\
  • Strong commercial focus with the ability to identify and manage risk.
  • Good leadership skills with the ability to work with and motivate staff in a global setting.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to relate to others at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate clearly & concisely in English & Japanese, both verbally & written, and ability to explain technical issues to non-engineers, including clients
  • The successful candidate will be required to review technical reports for clients, so attention to detail is paramount
  • Able to collate, analyse and act upon complex and diverse information from a variety of sources and give advice for senior management level decision making
  • Understanding on Japanese technical industry practices that are commonly applied for onshore and offshore wind project including Guideline for Public Auction requirement(公募占用指針), Official Explanation of Technological Standards for Offshore Wind Power(洋上風力発電設備に関する技術基準の統一的解説)and so on
