Mercari R4D is a research and development organization established in December 2017 with the goal of social implementation of advanced technologies.
“R4D” stands for Research and the four D’s: Design, Development, Deployment, and Disruption — representing our mission to bridge research, innovation, and real-world impact.
We are seeking individuals with a high level of expertise in machine learning or computer vision, who have a strong interest in cutting-edge multimodal foundation models and can work autonomously. We welcome candidates who are motivated to analyze large-scale data obtained from the market, understand its characteristics, and propose technical solutions for machine learning and performance evaluation. As a member of our Tokyo-based team, you will contribute to creating AI technologies that support the next generation of e-commerce platforms.

Responsibilties
- Develop data strategies for the collection, sampling, labeling, handling, and utilization of massive datasets to improve the performance of machine learning models that power next-generation e-commerce platforms.
- Design and enhance scalable data pipelines and automation for machine learning and performance evaluation.
- Analyze large-scale data to understand its characteristics, propose technical solutions for machine learning and performance evaluation, and present the results both internally and externally.
- Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and business teams to research and implement advanced technologies for next-generation AI services.

Qualifications
Required Experience/Skills
- Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- At least 2 years of experience in data science or related fields, including theoretical knowledge in machine learning (deep learning, statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, etc.).
- Experience in software development using Python (numpy, scipy, scikit, pandas) and databases.
- Experience using machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Familiarity with modern development tools and cloud environments such as Git, AWS, or GCP.
Preferred Experience/Skills
- 5+ years of experience in data science or related fields.
- Experience analyzing large-scale databases (petabyte level).
- Experience in building large datasets.
- Experience building and managing infrastructure with Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Terraform, GitHub Actions, or similar tools.
- Business-level Japanese proficiency, with smooth reading, writing, and listening skills.
Language
- Japanese: Independent (CEFR - B2) preferred
- English: Independent (CEFR – B2)
