Responsibilities

  • Commit to achieving a better user experience and business growth
    • Collaborate with various teams to realize the value we want to deliver to our users
    • Identify issues based on quantitative and qualitative research conducted primarily in Japanese
    • Conduct user interviews, usability testing, and surveys with Japanese-speaking users of the Mercari app
    • Analyze research findings and propose actionable strategies to increase the likelihood of success for our business, products, and initiatives
  • Create mechanisms to foster a user-centric perspective for all Mercari members
    • Communicate research insights effectively across the company, both in Japanese and English
    • Conduct research leveraging AI (e.g., research ops, development of learning content)

  • Think from the stakeholder’s perspective in discussions
  • Take ownership of creating and maximizing value for our users, even if that means proposing a stop or pivot in direction
  • Remain committed to making ethical decisions

Qualifications

Required Experience/Skills

  • Shared belief in the mission and values of Mercari Group and its various companies
  • Five or more years of practical experience in research related to services or products, or equivalent knowledge/skills
  • Ability to conduct interviews in Japanese with Mercari app users, and understanding of relevant cultural context
  • Experience working on projects to improve services or products in cooperation with other teams or clients
  • Ability to autonomously carry out the entire process of determining and resolving research issues, from planning to analysis and reporting
  • Research methods: Interviews, surveys, field surveys, diary surveys, or other new methods
  • Research topics: Understanding market environments, identifying needs, or conducting concept tests, usability tests, or post-market retrospectives
  • Ability to communicate analysis results in a way that allows stakeholders to make decisions
  • Strong curiosity and a hunger to understand the user perspective (empathy)

Preferred Experience/Skills

  • Ability to formulate research strategies to achieve the business roadmap
  • Experience reporting to and holding discussions with business leaders and senior management
  • Experience managing people and building organizations while working as a researcher
  • Experience in other fields, such as product design, product management, engineering, or data analysis
  • Ability to design and facilitate workshops
  • Ability to extract and compile data using SQL
  • Rich life experience
